Nitrogen generator types
Equipment makes it possible to obtain nitrogen from an unlimited, universal and free source – air. Two technologies are used for production:
- Adsorption. It is based on the adsorption principle. “Extra” oxygen molecules are adsorbed from atmospheric air. A molecular sieve is used, which is specially structured and has a large number of pores of size required. Oxygen molecules penetrate into pores of the sieve, while nitrogen remains in an adsorption layer.
Adsorption does not use heating and operates in short cycles, which are necessary to switch between adsorption tanks: while the air is separated into its components in the first one, the second one is cleaned of impurities. In this way, nitrogen adsorption generator provides a regular gas supply with a possibility to customize purity degree.
- Membrane. Compressed air passes through a membrane consisting of coil-wound polymer fiber. By creating different partial pressures on both outside and inside of the membrane, nitrogen is separated from air mixture. Gas is supplied to a consumer through one port and other gases are discharged through another port.
Nitrogen adsorption generator can be used in almost any industrial and non-production activities, as it provides stable purity up to 99.999%. Adsorbent service life is from 10 to 15 years.
Operating a membrane unit may not be economically viable because it requires much more compressed air to produce a gas purity of 99.5-99.9%. Membranes will inevitably and rather quickly wear out. We can conclude that buying an adsorption-type nitrogen generator is in most cases a better and more profitable solution.
Nitrogen generator operating principle
The unit operates as follows:
- Molecular sieve is used as an adsorbent. Service life is unlimited if incoming compressed air filtration is properly organized.
- Oxygen molecules are trapped in granule’s pores, releasing nitrogen molecules.
- Two columns operate in parallel (one in operation, another in regeneration mode). This ensures virtually uninterrupted nitrogen production.
- Nitrogen separation from the air occurs due to oxygen adsorption by molecular granules.
