Adsorption Technology for Oxygen Production

The oxygen generator is the main element of the adsorption oxygen unit. The PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) technology is based on gas mixtures separating into high-concentration components from atmospheric air by two processes alternation — adsorption and desorption — which take place within several minutes. An adsorbent absorbs readily adsorbable components of the mixture, which is separated by passing weakly adsorbable or non-adsorbable components through an apparatus. The adsorbent absorbs gas to a state of equilibrium between adsorption and desorption. To remove adsorbed components from the adsorbent surface, temperature must be raised or pressure must be released. The non-heated PSA technology advantages include:

  • time and energy savings compared to other oxygen generation technologies because there are no heating and cooling stages for absorbing components;
  • high cycle start-up and shutdown rates, unlike cryogenic plants;
  • low energy costs;
  • long-term adsorbents use without need for replacement — once every 5 years;
  • more affordable equipment cost compared to cryogenic equipment.

Adsorption Oxygen Unit Operation Principle

To obtain oxygen, a synthetic zeolite is used, which is specially structured and has a large number of pores of a required size. The ONH Systems Company adsorption oxygen unit operation principle is the following:

  1. Nitrogen molecules are trapped into granule’s pores, releasing oxygen molecules.
  2. Two columns operate in parallel, one in operation and another in regeneration mode. This ensures virtually uninterrupted oxygen production.
  3. Oxygen is separated from the air due to nitrogen absorption by molecular granules.
