Charcoal molecular sieve is a carbon molecular sieve, a porous material with a special three-dimensional structure. Pores of the same size allow the molecular sieve to selectively adsorb a mixture of gases. Carbon molecular sieve use in PSA units allows high-purity gas production. Their main application is air separation into nitrogen and oxygen or pure nitrogen production.
Carbon molecular sieves (CMS) have an ordered microporous structure with a pore size of 0.3 nm (3 angstroms). Oxygen molecules with a kinetic diameter of approximately 2.9 Å penetrate and are trapped into the pores, while nitrogen molecules with a kinetic diameter of 3.1 Å pass through the adsorbent layer unimpeded. Oxygen-enriched air adsorbed by the CMS is released due to pressure reduction. After regeneration, the CMS is ready for the next cycle of nitrogen-enriched air production.
