Selecting the Right Hydrogen Production System: A Strategic Guide from ONH Systems

Submit a request

Choosing the appropriate hydrogen generation system is a critical step in launching any hydrogen-related project — whether for energy storage, industrial use, or fuel cell applications. Each production method comes with unique benefits and technical requirements, and your system must align with project goals, safety standards, and economic constraints.

Hydrogen in industry

Although abundant in the universe, hydrogen rarely exists in pure form on Earth. It must be produced through various methods, each with its own pros and cons:

Main hydrogen production methods:

  • Electrolysis of Water

Environmentally friendly, but energy-intensive. Involves splitting water into H₂ and O₂ using electricity.

  • Steam Methane Reforming (SMR)

Cost-effective but reliant on natural gas. Involves reacting methane or LPG with steam over a catalyst.

  • Gas Separation (using PSA units)

Extracts hydrogen from gas mixtures produced in petrochemical processes.

Key Considerations for Choosing a Hydrogen System:

  1. Project Objectives

Define how hydrogen will be used: energy storage, transportation, industrial processing, etc.

  2. Energy Efficiency

Opt for systems with high efficiency to minimise operational costs.

  3. Technology Evaluation

Assess the pros and cons of each production technology for your specific application.

  4. Safety Requirements

Hydrogen systems must include leak detectors, gas venting systems, and other safety mechanisms.

  5. Scale of Operation

Small-scale mobile systems may suffice for pilot projects, while large facilities require high-capacity stationary units.

  6. Cost and ROI

Evaluate both upfront and long-term costs — including maintenance, operation, and utility needs.

  7. Environmental Impact

Green hydrogen methods (like electrolysis) are preferable for low-emission goals.

Stationary vs Mobile Hydrogen Systems

Stationary systems (e. g., PSA units or reformers producing over 150 Nm³/h) can be integrated into factories or installed as containerised outdoor modules.

Mobile electrolysis stations, by contrast, offer flexibility and are well-suited for remote decentralised applications. These compact units generate hydrogen on-site and are easy to install.

ONH Systems’ Expertise

ONH Systems designs and manufactures both stationary and mobile hydrogen plants, including containerised hydrogen generators using water electrolysis. Our engineers have over a decade of experience, and all equipment complies with both Russian and international safety standards.

We support you at every step:

  1. Evaluate available site space
  2. Develop project documentation and safety assessments
  3. Define technical specs: output, purity, pressure
  4. Plan utility connections (power, water, pipelines)
  5. Select auxiliary equipment (e. g., substations, water treatment, storage tanks)

Once these stages are complete, our specialists will help you choose or build the ideal hydrogen solution for your needs.
