The development of low-carbon hydrogen energy in Russia is key to achieving decarbonisation goals and building a national hydrogen sector in cooperation with international partners. At the Russian Energy Week 2023, experts reviewed the current outlook for hydrogen energy. It was noted that Russia is keeping pace with global developments in hydrogen technologies and is already preparing to introduce new hydrogen-based products to the market. Some technologies are undergoing final testing, including plans to build a nuclear facility with a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor to produce hydrogen with carbon capture.
However, one key issue is the lack of local consumers near hydrogen production sites. Hydrogen is not in direct competition with other energy sources due to its high production energy cost. Steam methane reforming (SMR) and the associated climate challenges were also subjects of discussion.
Stimulating demand is essential for developing a viable hydrogen economy. Potential applications include hydrogen-powered public transport and diesel fuel replacement.
